About Us

The Iowa Brown & Black Presidential Forum was established with three major objectives:

  • To have the presidential candidates and the national and international media focus on African-American and Latino issues.

  • To educate the African-American and Latino community in Iowa about the political process as it relates to the issues and problems that affect them.

  • To assist in the mobilization of members of both African-American and Latino communities to participate in the political process and promote positive change.

The 2000 Brown and Black Presidential Forum was the first minority forum of the new millennium. The 2004 Forum reminded us of the Niagara Movement of the early 1900's in regards to how small cities like Des Moines, Iowa and Niagara, New York can have significant impact on the political process and minorities across the nation.

The Iowa Brown-Black Presidential Forum is a nonpartisan group that was founded by Co-Chairs Iowa State Representative Wayne Ford and Mary Campos in 1984. Campos is a prominent member of the Des Moines Latino community. Rep. Ford is the founder and director of Urban Dreams, a United Way Agency located in Des Moines, Iowa. MSNBC, CSPAN, other national and local news organizations have covered the event since its inception.
